Bowling anyone?
By Chris Himonidis
While Bowling doesn’t jump to the forefront of most people’s minds when it comes to athletics, there is no question that it is both competitive and requires skill. Colerain Bowling is flush with both as the current Cardinal squad is 9-2 (4-2, GMC) after a hard fought loss on the road this past weekend.
Last Friday the Cardinals traveled north to take on Mason and WeAreColerain.com was there to cover the action. In a battle of city ranked #1 Mason vs. #2 Colerain, it did not disappoint as the Cardinals fought valiantly on enemy lanes to come up just short of taking home the victory. Colerain Boys Bowling Coach Noe said playing on the road is tough because you don’t get the practice time on an opponent’s lanes, which means a lot in bowling. However, he credited Mason as being a great team who came prepared and put up their second highest pin total of the season (3,047). It was the third match in a row the Comets have topped 3,000 pins. The Cardinals were lead by Seniors Brandon Schaiper (2-time 2nd Team All-GMC) and Matt Smith who both average over 200 per game. Brandon is 2nd in the GMC in average at 218.6 after Friday’s contest. Coach Noe said a rematch with Mason is possible if both squads can get to the Sectional finals.
Both Brandon and Matt love bowling and said they average roughly 30 games a week. They have been bowling since 7th grade and feel that more people would enjoy it if they gave it a shot. “It’s no less challenging than Golf and just as athletic” was a quote from our two bowling all-stars. Before 2007, the OHSAA had not sanctioned bowling as an “official” sport but the renewed interest and growing number of teams in the state led to the first official state tournament last season which has the Cardinal Bowlers excited about their chances this year to make a solid playoff run.
The remaining schedule for the team is as follows:
Wed. 1/28 vs. Hamilton @ Colerain Bowl – 4:00PM
Mon. 2/2 vs. Fairfield @ Fairfield Lanes – 4:00PM
Thur. 2/5 vs. Lakota East @ Colerain Bowl – 3:30PM
If you are a classmate of anyone on the bowling team, go check these guys at one of their remaining matches. They deserve the support and would enjoy seeing a few fans cheering them on. Check back at WeAreColerain.com for more updates on the Bowling team as they wind down the regular season and get ready for State Tournament.
And always remember….WE ARE…COLERAIN!!!
